Outdoor California magazine celebrates 50 years

A special anniversary edition of Outdoor California, a magazine published by the California Department of Fish & Game, is out now to celebrate 50 years in print.

The issue contains profiles of wildlife areas around the state, including Hope Valley.

Published six times a year since 1953, Outdoor California costs $9.95 for a subscription, a price reduced from the normal rate of $12, but single-copy issues are available for free.

“It offers stories behind conservation management and wildlife,” said Alexia Retallack, editor of the magazine since 1996. “Stuff that makes the news, the studies, species profiles and things you might not hear of anywhere else. Not sensational news, but news of interest.”

Outdoor California prints about 21,000 copies of each issue and has 12,000 subscribers.

The July-August issue focused on bears and is still available. For a single copy, or to subscribe, call (916) 653-6420.
