Pay-to-play sports, music to be considered

A $25 fee for sports and music participation will be discussed and possibly voted upon at tonight’s Lake Tahoe Unified School District board meeting.

The board delayed voting on the matter until Washoe County School District made its decision whether it would cut athletic programs because of state budget concerns.

Washoe, LTUSD’s main competitor in sports, didn’t cut any programs but instituted a $25 fee for sports.

To cover rising transportation costs, LTUSD is considering putting in place its own fees. The $25 will apply for each sport at South Tahoe middle and high schools. Students involved with music will pay the $25 to cover costs for the entire school year, said Superintendent Diane Scheerhorn.

The district’s cost for transportation is $1.4 million. California supplies about $1 million leaving the district to cover the remaining $400,000, Scheerhorn said.

If the fees are passed by a vote, the district will try to pay one-quarter, or $100,00 of that amount. Officials are planning athletic fees will cover 95 percent of the $100,000.

The costs will be detailed at the 6 p.m. meeting at the district office at 1021 Al Tahoe Blvd.

Other agenda items include:

— Consideration to change the placement of the public comment session.

The board is looking into a possible change after receiving a request by Citizen’s Financial Advisory Committee, a community group concerned about the district’s future.
