Pets celebrated at ‘Paws’ festival

Paws for a Cause Pet Festival is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 23. The benefit for the South Lake Tahoe Humane Society and S.P.C.A. will take place on the grounds of the Tahoe Colony Inn, behind the Crescent V Fashion Center. A pet parade through the shopping center will begin at 10 a.m.

Included will be contests and prizes for best pet and person lookalike, longest ears, longest tail, biggest pet, smallest pet, bet singing dog, best pet trick and more. Wiinners will be selected by audience vote. Everyone is invited to celebrate the human-animal bond with live music, fun and games. Spectators and photographers without pets are welcome, along with guardians and their social pets on leash or in carriers.

Scheduled to appear with live music are Nature’s Fury, Dan Slater and saxophonist Niall McGuiness. CC the Clown and Chris the Juggler will perform throughout the day.

The middle school education class will host a photo booth where pictures will be taken and instantly put on novelty items of choice. Paw Spa Pet Grooming will perform nail trims. An agility course will be set up for canines to try out and there will be a Canine Treasure Hunt for prizes.

Raffle tickets will be on sale or prizes including a giant gumball machine, plush stuffed toys, gift certificates for sports and pet, entertainment and gift items.

Free information on pet care, training and behavior tips will be available and shelter staff will be on hand to answer questions. There will be an adopter reunion area to post pet photos or meet and talk.

Admission is free. Food, T-shirts, bandanas, Frisbees and more will be available for purchase. A Doggie Diner area will be set aside with special treats for the pet set. Entry in the pet parade is a $5 donation to support the care of orphan shelter animals. Each pet parade participant will receive a goody bag with gifts inside.

A photo contest will take place, with participant voting on the spot. Entries must be received by Sept. 15. To enter the photo contest mail a 3- by 5-inch to maximum 4- by 7-inch photo of your pet, along with a $5 entry fee to Photo Contest, P.O. Box PET, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96158. Please send duplicates. Photos cannot be returned and will be pinned to the photo gallery display Cash prizes will be awarded for first-, second- and third-place. Photo entry forms are available at the shelter and photos may be dropped of there between 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
