Pilot missing near Mammoth Lakes
April 28, 2009
FRESNO, Calif. ” The search continues for a motorized glider that went missing near Mammoth Lakes in the eastern Sierra Nevada Friday.
While officials have not released the name of the two on board, the Pueblo, Colo., Chieftain reports they are a Canon City couple and that the husband is an experienced pilot familiar with the area. The couple left Thursday for a trip to Modesto.
Lt. Matt Scherzi of the Civil Air Patrol says the search at high altitudes above the 11,000 foot Mammoth Mountain requires that pilots, facing treacherous downdrafts common in the eastern Sierra, wear oxygen masks and check in frequently.
Searchers so far have launched 74 missions inside a 50-mile radius from the spot where the plane disappeared from radar.
