Planning Commission Meeting advance

Simplicity and one-stop shopping aren’t usually mentioned in the same sentence with South Lake Tahoe zoning regulations.

But that may change soon – if the city and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency can successfully consolidate their efforts and approval processes.

The South Lake Tahoe Planning Commission will decide Wednesday whether to bring a recommendation to the City Council concerning updates on city and TRPA zoning codes. The purpose of the revisions is to reduce duplication, simplify and streamline land use regulations between the bistate regulatory agency and the city.

“We were aiming to create user-friendly goals and policies,” said Gary Marchio, principal planner for the City of South Lake Tahoe. “It was redundant to have two sets of rules -the TRPA’s and the city’s. Now we can have one set and make the whole process quicker and easier.”

The amendments would also allow TRPA to delegate project approvals to the city by creating a one-stop permit counter.

“These are the basic building blocks we’re working on so that we can delegate to the city the ability to issue permits for certain projects,” said Rick Angelocci, TRPA’s chief of project review. “Our ultimate goal is to simplify the permit process for the applicant.”
