Platz hearing gets continued

Attorneys in the Lisa Platz case met Tuesday at El Dorado County Superior Court to continue a hearing on the release of evidence.

Judge Jerald Lasarow ordered the evidence, which has been in the possession of the Department of Justice since January, to be released to defense experts in the Bay Area by Oct. 7.

Prosecutors were concerned about maintaining the integrity of evidence, consisting of bloody clothes. A journal will be used to detail who will work on the evidence. The process is a safeguard to make sure there will be no unsupervised access to the clothes.

In addition, defense experts must secure the evidence, presumably in a locker, during non-testing.

Lisa Platz is currently being held in El Dorado County Jail on charges of first- degree murder and kidnapping with special circumstances. She is being held responsible for the murder of her 9-year-old daughter, who was killed during a police standoff at a South Lake Tahoe campground last September.

James Csucsai, who was in the tent with Platz and Rebbeca Aramburo, committed suicide last April in his El Dorado County Jail cell.

A motion filed by the defense to lower the kidnapping charge to child kidnapping is expected to be held Oct. 4. If the motion is successful, it could put in jeopardy the prosecutor’s decision to pursue the death penalty.

Trial is slated to begin in November.
