Police and fire log: Racist graffiti found at schools

William Ferchland, Tahoe Daily Tribune

Swastikas were found on the walls of Bijou and Al Tahoe elementary schools, South Lake Tahoe police officers said.

“White Pride,” was found Monday written in white paint on Bijou’s playground slide, and a balance beam was removed with a saw that was left at the scene, officers said.

Swastikas were carved on walls on Bijou’s C-wing and playground shed while one was carved over a black man’s face on a mural at Al Tahoe, authorities said.

There are no suspects in the case.

— Gerald Richardson, 56, and Mary Lynne Richardson, 53, from Novato, Calif., were driving their 1994 $40,000 Cobalt powerboat near Sugar Pine Point on Lake Tahoe when the engine caught fire and the boat sank, El Dorado County sheriff’s deputies said.

Heavy smoke inhaled by Gerald Richardson mandated him to be checked by a doctor but otherwise there were no serious injuries reported.

Gerald said the boat was on fire for more than 30 minutes, spoiling the Richardson’s chance for a swim.

“It was spectacular,” Gerald said. “(Mary Lynne) turned around and saw smoke. I tried to get the fire extinguisher but the entire back (portion) of the boat was on fire.”

A salvage operation to rescue the boat about 250 feet below the lake’s surface is expected to begin shortly but Gerald wants to wait and see if his insurance will cover the loss.

“We just found out we’re going to be grandparents of twins so this doesn’t mean diddly,” Gerald said.

— Adam Finch, 23, of Minden, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after he allegedly hit a 31-year-old Folsom, Calif., male over the head with a beer bottle inside Nero’s Nightclub, Douglas County sheriff’s deputies said.

Finch reportedly didn’t enjoy Arthur Ramirez’s smoking in his direction and struck him over the head, deputies said.

Ramirez received a laceration to his head and scratches around his right eye. Tahoe Douglas paramedics treated him on the scene.

— A box of Dominican cigars was stolen from the Lake Tahoe Cigar Shop inside Horizon Casino Resort on Friday, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department said.

— A 42-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia after El Dorado County sheriff’s deputies found him erratically riding a bicycle with a weed eater under his arm.

Three pipes were found in his fanny pack on Monday night and deputies determined he was under the influence of a controlled substance after a sobriety and urine test, a deputy said.
