Police arrest suspect in South Lake Tahoe food tampering case
After executing a search warrant that revealed items relevant to their investigation, detectives on Tuesday arrested a South Lake Tahoe man in connection with a food tampering case at Raley’s earlier this month.
Officials with the South Lake Tahoe Police Department arrested 43-year-old Harry Dally, and charged him with with a single felony count of intentionally dispensing a contaminating substance capable of causing death or injury on food items for human consumption.
Police say they were able to identify Dally as the suspect in the approximately four incidents of food tampering at the Hot Wok Chinese food restaurant in the Raley’s Supermarket thanks to video surveillance footage.
While police believe there is a “strong possibility” that the incidents at Raley’s are connected with a separate incident at Baja Fresh Mexican Grill this past Saturday, law enforcement has yet to affirm that connection.
In that most recent incident at Baja Fresh, a 12-year-old victim was hospitalized and treated for symptoms related to food poisoning. The victim was later released from the hospital in stable condition.
“While we believe a strong possibility exists that the crimes at the Baja Fresh restaurant and the Raley’s Hot Wok are connected, we have yet to receive video from Baja Fresh corporate resources in order to make a positive identification of a suspect there,” the department stated in a news release.
Still, the department believes “the immediate jeopardy to the public has been abated.”
Through execution of the search warrant Tuesday, Police discovered “items of interest related to this investigation,” which provided an indication of the substance used in the incident. However, law enforcement is withholding that information pending laboratory analysis and additional questioning of Dally, according to police.
