Police plot how to catch a thief
Undercover police decoys will be positioned throughout South Lake Tahoe but especially near Stateline as authorities are increasing efforts to catch a gun-wielding robber.
On Monday night a man approached a couple from Texas, demanding money and seizing the woman’s purse with roughly $800 inside, said South Lake Tahoe police Sgt. Cam Carmichael. The robbery occurred at Bellamy Court off Park Avenue at 6:40 p.m.
Several officers surrounded the Forest Suites Resort, where the robber was believed to have entered the building. The search was called off at about 8:30 p.m.
Other similar attempts involved a robber approaching a lone walker. On Dec. 22 a man entered Inn by the Lake, pointed a gun at the front desk clerk and demanded money be put in a bag.
Authorities believe the same person may be responsible for some or all of the robberies.
Carmichael said he was alarmed the latest incident involved two victims. Police advised people to avoid walking alone and stay clear of dark places.
“It’s scaring me because this guy is getting to be bold,” he said.
At least seven similar robberies have occurred in the Stateline area since Nov. 9. A gun was drawn each time.
Authorities are hoping to capture the elusive criminal before the New Year’s Eve weekend with all its crowds and boisterous visitors. Having someone pose as an unsuspecting visitor may help in nabbing the armed robber before they strike again.
In Monday’s robbery the man wore all black, from a beanie to his pants, but clothing descriptions have differed in most instances.
Secret Witness is providing a monetary award for information leading to the arrest and/or conviction of the man. He is described as being between 20 to 30 years old, about 6 feet tall with a thin build.
Anyone with information on the robberies is asked to contact Secret Witness at (530) 541-6800 or Detective Jeff Reagan at (530) 542-6100.
