Police searching for suspect in sexual assault

South Lake Tahoe police are looking for a suspect who allegedly sexually assaulted a woman at 2 a.m. on Thursday near a motel room on Cedar Avenue.

According to the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) news release, the suspect allegedly attacked a woman who had separated herself from a larger group, threatening her with a knife. The suspect forced the victim to a secluded area before he beat her violently and attempted to sexually assault her.

The victim managed to escape and ran back to the motel room, with the suspect in pursuit. The suspect was deterred by other people around the motel, who rendered aid to the victim.

The suspect ran east toward the state line.

SLTPD officers responded immediately and searched for the suspect but could not locate him. The victim was transported to Barton Hospital and transferred to Reno for further medical assistance.

Police are continuing to canvass the surrounding neighborhood for more information. At this time, officers only have a rough description of the suspect as a heavy-set (with a noticeable belly) Latino man, 5-foot-4 to 5-foot-6 feet tall, 18 to 22 years old, clean shaven with short black hair and wearing an unknown color T-shirt and khaki-colored shorts at the time of the assault.

Any helpful information related to this investigation can be forwarded to the South Lake Tahoe Police Department at 530-542-6100 or to South Lake Tahoe Secret Witness at 530-541-6800.
