Police warn of telephone fundraising scam

After an inquiry from a woman who was solicited credit card information over the phone, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department and South Lake Tahoe Police Officer’s Association want to remind residents that neither entity raises funds by phone.

“The person attempted to obtain personal and credit card information,” said Officer Josh Adler by e-mail. “When the woman was not willing to provide any information, the male caller tried to hard- sell her and became pushy and rude.

“Anyone soliciting for money by phone on behalf of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department or any of its employee associations is a scam,” he added.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Officer’s Association conducts fundraising efforts, but only by mail, and the most recent solicitation was more than a month ago, Adler said.

“The money raised from this fundraiser helps fund the South Lake Tahoe Police Explorer program,” he said. “Any monies that are left over are donated directly back to the community for programs such as youth sports teams, (South Lake Tahoe) Women’s Center and the South Lake Tahoe High School Athletic program, just to name a few.”

If anyone receives a phone call from someone soliciting money on behalf of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department or its employee associations, Adler advised them to not give them any information. Any such phone calls should be reported to the South Lake Tahoe Police Department at (530) 542-6100.
