Pollock Pine man upgraded after accident

The condition of a man from Pollock Pines, Calif., who was seriously injured in a car wreck Monday has been upgraded from critical to serious.

The head-on collision occurred around 8:30 a.m. on U. S. Highway 50 just west of Sierra-at-Tahoe Road. Samuel Wrzesinski, the 31-year-old injured in the wreck, was driving east in a 1985 Ford LTD when he allegedly crossed the center line and struck a 1995 Ford van.

A Careflight helicopter flew Wrzesinski to Washoe Medical Center with a broken leg and a head injury around 9:45 a.m. Paramedics took Dorothy Mason, the 59-year-old from Topaz, Calif., driving the van, to Barton Memorial Hospital where she was treated for minor injuries and released.

Witnesses reportedly told a California Highway Patrol officer that Wrzesinski’s car was weaving in and out of his lane before the wreck occurred. The Ford LTD was going 55 mph when it hit the van, CHP said.

Lake Valley firefighters responded and had to cut Wrzesinki out of his car. Battalion Chief Brian Eakin said both vehicles were totaled and both passengers were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident, but an air bag deployed in the van.

A CHP officer cited Wrzesinski for drunken driving because he reportedly smelled of alcohol.

Both lanes of U. S. Highway 50 had to be closed for 20 minutes when the Careflight helicopter landed at the scene.
