Halloween comes early to Lake Tahoe’s South Shore this year with the return of the annual Freakers Ball at MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa this Saturday.

The 37th annual event features four parties across the casino, a costume contest, DJs, sexy black jack dealers, go-go dancers, body painting and drink specials.

The main party takes place in the casino’s convention center, where Bay Area party band Pop Fiction, a frequent guest at the Freakers Ball, takes the stage. The band brings its own costume theme to the proceedings each year and has dressed up as everything from “The Wizard of Oz” to “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” in the past. Guitarist Dan Meblin declined to disclose this year’s Pop Fiction costume theme but said the band looks forward to the Freakers Ball each year.

“The party just keeps going,” Meblin said. “It just never ends. You just can’t do that in California.”

The eight-piece band covers everything from disco to new wave to hip-hop — ABBA’s “Disco Queen,” Guns N’ Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle” and Lady Gaga’s “Born this Way” are all represented on the band’s song list. Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up,” which has a devoted Internet following, and “(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life” from “Dirty Dancing” are among the band’s most recent additions. The latter often inspires people to recreate the iconic dance scene from the Patrick Swayze movie, just the kind of reaction Pop Fiction is after.

About 2,500 people are expected to attend this year’s Freakers Ball. People dressed as Siegfried and Roy, Adam and Barbara Maitland from “Beetlejuice” and Scarecrow from “Batman Begins” each made appearances last year, and there won’t be a shortage of creative costumes this year.

“We’re really excited,” said MontBleu director or marketing, entertainment and retail Marimille Dacia. “Its a fun event.”

Tickets to the Freakers Ball are $35 plus fees. Tickets to the event buy people entry into the convention center, the casino’s Opal and Blu nightclubs and MontBleu’s The Zone.

MontBleu is located at 55 U.S. Highway 50 in Stateline. More information is available at http://www.montbleuresort.com.
