Post office site met with skepticism

INCLINE VILLAGE – Construction of a new post office here may begin as early as summer, leaving a few residents unhappy about the location.

“These plans are not complete and they’re not workable,” said former Incline Village General Improvement District Board Chairman Syd Brosten.

The site for the new post office, on Village Boulevard and Tanager Street in Incline Village, is the wrong location he said.



“There are so many issues about the traffic impacts that haven’t been addressed,” Brosten said. “During the summer, Village (boulevard) is a very busy street and, now that people will be making an extra trip just to go to the post office, it will only get worse.”

The new building, slated to break ground in July, is a 19,500-square-foot, two-story structure with underground parking on a 1.34-acre plot, with additional parking on a one-third-acre parcel across the street, according to U.S. Postal Service Spokesman Martin Petrey



“We hope, in the best of all possible worlds, to get it started in a few months and finish in a year,” Petrey said. “Of course that’s contingent on approvals from the various agencies and Mother Nature.”

The new facility will have customer parking for 23 cars, 13 employee parking spaces and 21 spaces for company vehicles, according to U.S. Postal Service Public Affairs Spokesperson Augustine Ruiz.

“There will be four service windows inside the office, as well as a lobby with 6,000 post office boxes,” Ruiz said by phone from San Jose.

Another local resident, Ed Gurowitz, also took issue with the proposed location and said the post office started the planned move in 1999.

“Back then, the post office decided on their own that the village had grown too big for the existing facility,” Gurowitz said. “They didn’t ask anyone here. They just decided on their own it was too small.”

Gurowitz said the postal service hasn’t considered what effect moving the existing facility out of its present location will have on businesses in the complex.

“There are also safety factors they haven’t considered, with regards to possible gridlock, which could hamper emergency vehicles,” he said.

The fire district had no comment on the plans.
