Preliminary hearing postponed until next year

Gregory Crofton, Tahoe Daily Tribune

A man accused of robbing a South Lake Tahoe bank had his preliminary hearing pushed back until Jan. 3.

His court-appointed defense lawyer said she had just been assigned the case and was not prepared to take part in his preliminary hearing. The hearing was scheduled to happen Thursday in El Dorado County Superior Court.

Randy Rutherford, 39, of South Lake Tahoe was arrested Nov. 30 at the South Y Lodge. The motel is not far from the El Dorado County Savings Bank on Emerald Bay Road that was robbed Nov. 26.

Police and the FBI tracked Rutherford to the motel after they received calls from residents identifying him in a bank surveillance photo.

Rutherford is accused of walking in the bank wearing a beard, sunglasses and baseball cap. If convicted, Rutherford could be sentenced to a maximum of five years in prison.
