Project C receives thumb’s up from agency
After three years of planning, the bare-bones concept of South Lake Tahoe’s third redevelopment project has been fleshed out.
Drawing their inspiration from Lake Tahoe’s grand resorts of the past, two Colorado design firms have used pitched roofs and gabled facades in an effort to unite the project’s five elements.
Last week, project proponents unveiled the latest plans to members of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency’s governing board, and received encouragement in completing their plans.
Board member and casino executive Steve Wynn, who knows something about hotel development, praised the current design as a radical improvement for the area.
“It will be a tremendous and elegant shot in the arm for South Lake Tahoe,” Wynn said of the 17-acre project. “Without it, the future would be bleak. This is really fine stuff, and good for the community.”
Drake Delanoy, the board chairman, compared the project to Wynn’s Mirage Hotel Casino.
“The only difference is that it doesn’t have any volcanoes or fountains,” Delanoy said.
Lew Feldman, who represents the project’s two key backers – Harveys Resort Hotel/Casino and Segal and Yure – said the architects have succeeded in designing a meeting center that blends in with the Stateline corridor.
“What we have created is phenomenal architecture that happens to have within it a meeting space, without looking like a big box,” Feldman said.
The convention space and an outdoor replica of Lake Tahoe are the highlights of Project C, which will be built across the street from the Park Avenue Project. Located next to the Nevada border, the 25,000-foot meeting space is within walking distance of 4,000 hotel rooms, Feldman told the governing board.
In the project’s interior, a scale replica of Lake Tahoe called Lake Passage will help educate visitors and residents. Project backers envision interactive displays that will describe the lake’s history and environment.
The project is now in environmental review, and a draft environmental document will be released within four months, Feldman said. By January, he added, the project should be ready for approval.
