Kiss (not an acronym) formed in New York City in January 1973 with Gene Simmons on vocals and bass, lead guitarist Ace Frehley, rhythm guitarist Paul Stanley, and Peter Criss on drums.
The band bridged metal and glam rock, and its live theatrics ” replete with makeup, pyrotechnics, blood-spitting and Simmons’ tongue ” catapulted Kiss to equal parts fame and notoriety.
Kiss albums have hit the gold mark 34 times to date, and the group has sold more than 80 million albums worldwide. The original lineup reunited in 1996 before Criss and Frehley left again. Simmons and Stanley remain in the current lineup, along with drummer Eric Singer and guitarist Tommy Thayer.
