Pumps closed on Stateline Shell, Emerald Bay Chevron

Faced with ever-increasing corporation costs, two popular South Shore gas stations are throwing in the towel.

Montoya Stateline Shell and Auto Care is currently shut down and Emerald Bay Chevron will close April 1.

After 10 years of business, Montoya Stateline Shell operator Joseph Montoya was informed last year that the Shell corporation would not be renewing his lease, according to his son, Mike Montoya.

“Shell decided they didn’t want to be in this particular location anymore and the bank wouldn’t give us enough money to buy them out,” Mike Montoya said. “We couldn’t afford to buy it, so that’s the way it is.”

A similar situation provoked Al Moss’ decision to close his Chevron station on Emerald Bay Road.

Chevron Oil Company and Moss discussed the possibility of Moss’ buying the station, but Chevron’s final purchase price was too high.

“They came to the table with a final purchase price and I said, ‘Thank you, but no thank you. I will be off the premises by April 1.'”

According to Moss, Chevron recently adopted a new rent program.

“Rent on that facility (Emerald Bay Chevron) has gone sky high,” Moss said. “Chevron pricing policies have driven my volumes down, especially at that location. The volumes are going down and the prices are going up.”

Moss said buying Chevron out or continuing to rent at such high rates were both economically unfeasible.

Moss’ other gas station, Al’s Chevron Way, located at 3651 Lake Tahoe Blvd., remains open for business.

Montoya Stateline Shell Station’s former mechanic, Rex Kluever, has moved to the Union 76 station at Stateline.
