Quality over quantity for STHS golf team

Steve Yingling, Tribune sports editor

It’s quality, not quantity for the 2009 South Tahoe High girls’ golf team.

In the second week of preseason preparations, the Vikings are down to four players, an all-time low for 12th-year coach Marsha Butler. All four golfers were part of last year’s team, including fourth-year player Alexis Holmes.

“The girls look really good this fall, especially with their short games,” Butler said. “Steve Madison has worked on their short games and swings.

“The good thing is we have really dedicated players who want to play, and I’ve seen a lot of improvement.”

Butler attended last weekend’s Solheim Cup for the first time, watching the Americans overtake the Europeans on the final day. “It was a great, great experience,” Butler said. “It was exciting. The competition was pretty amazing, and to see them all pumped was exciting.”

Joining Holmes as returning players are senior Brittany Rumble, junior Morgan McCauley and sophomore Morgan Murphy.

Butler said that the elimination of the junior program at Tahoe Paradise Golf Course has hurt the number of players at STHS.

“The programs they had at Tahoe Paradise brought a lot of kids through that program. That stopped about three years ago, and we just don’t have them coming in.”

An elusive state golf tournament berth should become a reality for Holmes in her senior season. Last year, Holmes posted the third-best average score during the Sierra Division regular season, but scored 13 shots over her average at regionals to finish 17th and barely miss qualifying for state.

“She has been our No. 1 for the past three years, possibly four,” Butler said. “Her long-ball hitting is really going to be an attribute this season. She is getting much more consistent with it.

“She is a well-rounded girl between her basketball, music and golf. Alexis has a lot that she loves, and she wants to be perfect in everything she does.”
