Question over society arises

Emily Aughinbaugh, Tribune staff writer

After matching a $100,000 anonymous grant in June, the Lake Tahoe Humane Society Shelter in Meyers still does not have a date to open.

Dawn Armstrong, executive director for the Lake Tahoe Humane Society and Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said she originally hoped for the end of September to open the shelter but now says she does not know when it will open.

Armstrong said the center cannot open without a director, and although she said the director search had been narrowed she could not say when anyone will be hired.

The shelter was originally constructed in August 1994 by charitable contributions. Because the facility cost between $10,000 and $12,000 per month to operate, it shut its doors two years later.

An anonymous donor put up the $100,000 to be matched almost two years ago.

Armstrong could not be reached on the status of the money or in what kind of account it is being held.

Robert Gerat, El Dorado County Animal Control’s senior officer, said he is looking forward to the Humane Society shelter’s opening but he does not know how it will affect Animal Control.

“I don’t know yet on what level (the Humane Society shelter) is going to operate. I don’t know what animals they will take,” Gerat said. “But if it means we don’t have to put animals to sleep, that’s what I care about.”
