Questions remain on convention center lease
Questions about the lease for a convention center under construction near Stateline remained unanswered after Tuesday’s South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting.
At the Nov. 6 meeting, the council asked staff for more information about the number of days the city will be allowed to use the center, whether the city or the South Tahoe redevelopment agency will be the landlord for the property, and how long Rock Creek Resorts will be allowed to lease the facility.
Iris Yang, legal representation for the South Tahoe Redevelopment agency, addressed the council Tuesday and confirmed the length of the lease to be 99 years.
Concerning who should hold the title of the lease, Yang said making the city the title-holder of the convention center property would add legal hurdles to the process, but said “it really doesn’t make that much of a difference, technically.”
Yang did not answer council’s questions about how many days of city use will be included in the lease or additional questions from Mayor Kathay Lovell about details of wireless Internet at the center.
Also on Tuesday, the council heard an update concerning the possibility of a rent-control ordinance for mobile-home parks in South Lake Tahoe.
Discussion on the ordinance stems from negotiations between the owner and residents of Tahoe Verde mobile-home park over a possible rent increase.
A moratorium on rent increases is in place at Tahoe Verde until April, and the possibility of subdividing the property was brought up at the meeting.
Subdividing Tahoe Verde would nullify the effects of a potential rent-control ordinance at the park, city council members said.
After hearing arguments from both residents of the park and legal representation of the park’s owner, the council requested an update on negotiations within 60 days.
