Railroad symposium deadline approaching

The registration deadline for the Railroad History Symposium of the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City is Oct. 11. The three-day symposium sponsored by Friends of the Nevada State Railroad Museum will take place Oct. 18, 19 and 20.

This year’s symposium features a number of well known V & T, Nevada and California historians who will discuss the rise and fall of cities and town tied to the history of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad. Symposium programs will explore the social and economic conditions of the major and minor population centers served by the V&T before construction of the railroad, and the evolution of these towns during the first decade of rail service. The program includes a “then and now” photographic tour of the cities and towns covered.

Registration fees of $65 for members of the Nevada State Railroad Museum and $75 for non-members cover Friday and Saturday sessions and a Friday night reception at the Railroad Museum, Saturday night dinner at the Carson City Nugget and a Sunday morning program in the museum’s restoration shop. For more information contact the museum at (775) 687-6953 or the Division of Museum and History Administration Office at (775) 687-4340.

The Nevada State Museum operates steam-ups with historic Virginia & Truckee Railroad equipment on selected weekends throughout the year. The museum, located on Route 395 at the intersection of Fairview Drive in south Carson City, is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
