Rape suspect pleads not guilty

Bradley Foster

The Pioneer, Calif., man accused of sexually assaulting two South Lake Tahoe women pleaded not guilty Thursday to 11 felony charges, which could lead to seven life terms in a California state prison.

The charges against Edwin Robert Carlevato also include an alleged 1998 kidnapping and assault of a 20-year-old woman who managed to escape despite being held at gunpoint.

A two-week jury trail for Carlevato will begin on March 27.

“At this time, Mr. Carlevato is vigorously denying these charges,” said Simon Harvey, the public defender who is representing Carlevato.

Police arrested Carlevato Nov. 4 1999, at the Jackson Rancheria Casino, where he worked as a dealer. Several people reportedly called police and identified Carlevato after video and pictures of the rape suspect ran on newscasts and in area papers.
