A small stream flood advisory is in effect for much of the central Sierra Nevada through nearly the end of the month.

The National Weather Service in Reno warns that warmer temperatures in the forecast through Memorial Day will likely lead to continued rapid snowmelt.

“This will lead to high flows and minor flooding near unregulated creeks and streams leading out of the Sierra,” according to NWS.

The greatest risk for flooding is expected Thursday morning and over the weekend from Saturday to Tuesday morning when the advisory is set to expire. Peak flows typically occur during the evening and overnight hours.

The snowmelt comes on the heels of one of the most intense winters on record.

Some minor flooding has already been reported in parts of the Tahoe Basin. In late April, NWS issued a flooding warning for a section of the Truckee River near Lake Tahoe as water managers increased the flow of water out of the lake.

As of Tuesday afternoon, lake level was at 6,228.18 feet, just .92 inches from Lake Tahoe’s legal limit of 6,229.1 feet. The Upper Truckee River was just shy of 8 ½ feet — about 2 feet from flood stage.

NWS reminds those looking to recreate on the water that streams and creeks will be running fast and very cold.

“Those with plans to camp in the Sierra over the Memorial Day weekend should be prepared to quickly leave creek side campsites. Hikers will want to be cautious while trying to cross creeks and streams.”
