Fans of that vintage rock and roll sound will want to head to Crystal Bay Casino on Friday when Raul Malo takes the stage for an evening of music.
Having gained fame as the frontman of The Mavericks, Malo went out on his own in 2004 an has since released a handful of albums.
The band has since reunited and has several shows on tap for this year. But the North Shore performance will be all Malo, who has expanded the classic country sound into that of 1950s rock and roll — a fitting sound for a man whose voice at time could be mistaken for a passionate Roy Orbison — in his early albums.
As Malo explains in The Mavericks’ online band bio, Elvis Presley’s “It’s Now or Never” was one of the greatest musical influences in his life.
“That connected to every kind of music I liked from classical to The Beatles. I’ve spent my life emulating that record.”
The singer and guitar player has blended blues, jazz and Latin music — a life-long passion for the songwriter raised in Miami’s Cuban neighborhoods — into his solo career sound as well.
His last album, 2012’s “Around the World,” reflects that heavy influence of Latin music.
Malo performs at Crystal Bay Casino with Alih Jey on Friday, May 17. The show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 on the day of the show (plus taxes/fees).
Tickets are available online at bit.ly/Malo-Tahoe. It is a seated show.
