Red Cross volunteers moving up north

Tribune

Red Cross volunteers Dorothy and Robert “Mac” McGuire, who have lived at South Lake Tahoe since 1997, are moving to Florence, Ore. A farewell party will take place from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Sept. 10 at the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center, 3050 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

Dorothy, who volunteered with the Red Cross for two years at a Tokyo hospital during the Vietnam War, started volunteering with the South Lake Tahoe Disaster Unit of the American Red Cross in 1998 and has become its secretary, government liaison and one of its leaders. As government liaison, she worked in the incident command center during several emergencies including last year’s Gondola fire.

Mac is a certified driver of the Red Cross Emergency Response Vehicle. He has had the responsibility of maintaining agreements with local schools, governments and organizations for the use of their facilities as Red Cross shelters in an emergency. In addition, it was his responsibility to inspect shelters just prior to their use and just after their closing.

The South Lake Tahoe Red Cross Disaster Unit is always looking for new volunteers, but the McGuires departure makes the need even greater. Many jobs are available including those being vacated by the couple. Anyone interested in becoming a Red Cross volunteer is urged to call Sharon Marlowe at (530) 542-4972. Messages also may be left at the local Red Cross office at (530) 542-3885.
