Redistricting meeting set for Thursday

Timothy Bowman

The El Dorado County Redistricting Committee is scheduled to hold a second public meeting at the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center Thursday at 1:30 p.m. to discuss plans for county redistricting.

The committee submitted two proposals to the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors May 8. The board requested the committee hold three meetings in the county to gather information from the public about the plans. The committee is expected to redraw the maps based on the information.

The two proposals submitted May 8 are the Strawberry Plan and the Pollock Pines Plan. The results of the 2000 census require District 5 to acquire more residents to maintain relative population equality among the five county districts.

The Pollock Pines plan created controversy in the county because it would expand District 5 to incorporate Tahoe and Pollock Pines. At the first meeting in Pollock Pines May 17, Pollock Pines-Camino residents spoke out against the plan, arguing Tahoe and Pollock Pines are different communities of interest and should not be in the same county district.

The final meeting is expected to be May 31 in El Dorado Hills. The committee is expected to resubmit redistricting plans before the June 15 deadline for final recommendations.
