Reinhard fails to get enough signatures

Susan Wood, Tahoe Daily Tribune

Stephen Reinhard, a South Lake Tahoe man who wanted to raise the transient occupancy tax to help solve the city’s budget woes, failed to collect the adequate number of signatures to place the measure on the November ballot.

The deadline for collecting the necessary 850 registered voters was May 20. He signed up 175 people.

“I’m doing it myself. I couldn’t reach enough people,” he said.

Reinhard said he plans to continue to collect signatures to place his initiative on the ballot of a special election. This time, he has 180 days to do so, but the ante has been raised. Instead of 10 percent, he must collect 15 percent of registered voters to make it fly.

Reinhard said he’ll have more time to dedicate to the effort this summer.

In the meantime, the city will draft language for its own ballot measure for the upcoming general election. City Attorney Cathy DiCamillo hopes to have the initiative before the City Council for its June 4 meeting.

The initiative involves an increase in the motel room tax by $1.50 per room per night, if certain criteria are met. The measure will also call for a hike in business license fees.

Most motel properties now charge guests 10 percent transient occupancy tax, while redevelopment properties charge 12 percent. Reinhard’s proposal would have raised the TOT to 13 percent.
