Remote workers share joy in the Lake Tahoe lifestyle

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — As the world becomes more connected by the Internet and options for work expand, the choices of where people want to work also have changed.

Places like South Lake Tahoe have become a more attractive place, whether out of desire to take advantage of the recreation opportunities or for a place to raise a family.

It’s a trend increasing in people who have the option to work remotely or aren’t tied to one particular spot, especially those in Generation X (those born between 1960 and 1980) and Millennials (born between 1981 and 1997).

Both generations represent two-thirds of the workforce, with Millennials just ahead at some 53.5 million in the market.

Enterprising people such as Lara Miller, Aaron Darke and Eliot Landrum have shown that to be the case. Landrum is an early-generation Millennial, while Miller and Drake are Generation X.

All three currently work out of the co-working space Tahoe Mountain Lab, but have an eye for staying long-term in the Tahoe area.

Landrum, a programmer was a transplant from Dallas while his employer has its base in St. Louis. He said he moved here for the skiing and outdoors.

Miller, who runs her own public relations business, moved from San Francisco’s Tenderloin district. She looked at the startup community in Lake Tahoe before making a decision to move, and said she liked what she saw.

“The start-up community is great,” Miller said. “I think it’s going to grow a lot once word gets out how about how conductive the area is to business and so many resources here.”

She added one of the high points was the community itself.

“People here are a lot nicer,” Miller said.

Darke, owner of Darke Marketing, moved to South Lake Tahoe with his family from a large city in Australia.

“I wanted my kids to grow up in a place that was pretty and there was outdoor activities,” Darke said. “It’s more of a close knit community than a large city.”

He said his marketing business allows him that opportunity.

“I don’t have to be in the same city or country as my clients,” Darke said. “I can start meetings, I can FaceTime, it allows me not to have that requirement to be in the same room to actually do my job.”
