Reno man arrested on suspicion of kidnapping
A woman was kidnapped at gun point Wednesday afternoon while waiting for a bus on U. S. Highway 50 near Reno Avenue.
The 29-year-old from South Shore was forced to get in a 1989 blue Ford Mustang after the driver flashed a small semi-automatic pistol, police said. She was on her way to work at a Stateline casino when she was abducted.
The man reportedly drove her to Midway Motel at 3876 U.S. Highway 50 where the woman escaped when her captor’s attention lapsed for a moment.
She ran to Subway and called a casino shuttle bus for a ride. After urging from co-workers she reported the incident to police.
The alleged driver of the Mustang, 31-year-old Joseph Rodoni from Reno, was arrested by California Highway Patrol at 4 p.m., 1 1/2 hours after the kidnapping. Officers found his car in a snowbank at Busch Way and Pioneer Trail.
“There had been an earlier broadcast put out by police of a vehicle traveling recklessly in the area of Al Tahoe,” said Officer Greg Norrgard. “We found the car spun out into a snowbank … and the driver was highly intoxicated slumped over the wheel.”
South Lake Tahoe police said the 29-year-old woman identified Rodoni as her abductor in a lineup.
Rodoni, a convicted felon in Nevada and California, was booked for kidnapping, felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed gun, assault with a firearm and DUI. His bail was set at $552,500.
