Retired deputy sentenced to five years for union theft

Staff and wire reports

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Donald Atkinson, a retired El Dorado County Sheriff’s deputy who was charged with crimes including embezzlement in March, pleaded guilty to three felonies Monday, according to county prosecutors.

Atkinson will be sentenced to five years in state prison July 30 after entering pleas to embezzlement, elder fraud and perjury, according to a statement from the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office.

The charges include enhancements of excessive taking and aggravated white collar crime, according to the statement.

In March, prosecutors alleged Atkinson stole money while serving as president of the El Dorado County Deputy Sheriffs’ Association from 2005 to 2011, falsified documents to the union and took money from checks he wrote from the union’s accounts.

Atkinson will be ordered to pay $438,348 in victim restitution to the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Association and a fraud victim.

While Atkinson is in state prison and while on parole, he will be ordered to direct the California Public Employees’ Retirement System to pay $1,000 per month from his retirement payments to the victims, according to the statement.

This case was the result of a joint effort between the California Attorney General’s Office and the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office.
