Rider remains critical

Staff report

The condition of the man who crashed during Saturday’s Death Ride bicycle race was unchanged Monday. He remains in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit at Washoe Medical Center, the event’s medical director reported.

Dr. Patrick Martin said the man is being treated for a head injury after he fell off his bicycle descending the east side of Monitor Pass.

A team with the East Fork Fire Department, which was unavailable Monday, responded to the accident. He was stabilized and transported to the Reno hospital by a CALSTAR helicopter.

Organizer Bob Anderson, executive director of the Alpine County Chamber of Commerce, declined to release the man’s name as requested by the rider’s family. He did indicate the man lives outside of South Lake Tahoe.
