Rite Aid offers health tests

Rite Aid continues its sixth year providing a series of nonprofit, affordable health screening services to communities throughout California and Nevada to help fight the high cost of health care.

The Rite Aid Pharmacy at 1020 Al Tahoe Blvd. has scheduled a health screening with Advanced Medical Diagnostics on Friday. Each test takes about five minutes and costs $35.

Results are provided upon the completion of each test. Appointments are not necessary but are recommended so that organizers can spread the testing more efficiently throughout the day.

Testing hours will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. To schedule an appointment and for more information, call AMD toll free at (866) 263-2663.

Tests performed include:

— Osteoporosis: The bone density test requires the removal of one shoe, one sock (no hosiery) and scans the bare heel using Ultra Sound allowing earlier and more frequent screening without the harmful, cumulative radiation from conventional methods.

— Heart attack and stroke risk assessment: This non-invasive test measures arterial elasticity or one’s risk of “hardening of the arteries.” Short sleeves are requested for this test.

— Cholesterol test: The device measures total cholesterol, HDL (good), LDL (bad), and triglycerides and calcium rations. Fasting is not required.

— Diabetes test: This real life glucose tolerance test measures the ability to control blood sugar after a sugary drink and meal. Patients establish a baseline, then must return in 1.5 hours for re-measurement.

This test measures a patient’s tolerance to normal dietary challenges. A three-hour fast is optimal. This test ends at 4:30 p.m.

— Liver enzymes (ALT): A must for people on cholesterol-lowering medications.

— Liver function: For smokers, ex-smokers and those with allergies or asthma.
