Whittell High cross country runners took advantage of previewing the state meet course during an invitational hosted by Sparks on Saturday.

The Warriors produced seven personal-best times at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno. Leading the way was junior John Robinson, who placed runner-up to Incline’s Mike Sunseri with a 5-kilometer time of 18 minutes, 25 seconds. Sunseri, who was timed in 17:29, helped the Highlanders finish first as a team.

Additonal personal-best times for for the boys included Chris Crawford, eighth, 19:16; Zach Welch, 17th, 20:27; Josh Welch, 45th, 22:40; and Kyle Crawford, 65th, 24:05. Also contributing to the boys’ sixth-place standing were Avery Laub, 70th, 24:41; and Sean Sullivan, 89th, 28:22.

Both of Whittell’s female entrants were at their personal best. Sammy Rupp finished 13th in 23:04 and Megan Miller claimed 30th in 26:56.

Bishop Manogue’s Michella Mowry placed first in 20:47 to lead the Miners to first overall.

“We’re showing improvement,” said Whittell coach Lindsay Wines. “During the week off (of competition) they worked hard, and now it’s time to get ready for zone.”

First, the Warriors will compete at the Spanish Springs Invitational on Friday. Wines is hopeful of having a complete girls’ team for regionals after the squad picked up two runners last week.

Warriors get through tough stretch

No soccer team in the state had a tougher schedule than the Whittell High Warriors’ boys’ soccer team last week.

In a three-day span, the Warriors played the top-ranked and second-rated teams in the Sierra Nevada Sports Media Poll. Whittell lost to No. 1 and once-beaten Sparks 4-1 on Thursday, then was defeated 5-0 by second-ranked Sparks on Saturday in Sparks.

“Sparks was very good and skilled,” said Whittell coach Steve Maltase. “(It was a) tough matchup for us.”

The Warriors had several chances to break up the Railroaders’ shutout. Tim Stone blasted a shot off the post and Blake Werle missed a penalty kick. Whittell freshman goalkeeper Austin Neil stopped a Sparks penalty kick.

Whittell, 0-6 in the Northern 3A Tahoe League, plays a nonleague game at Yerington on Wednesday, then will play host to Sage Ridge on Thursday.

South Tahoe JV team rallies for tie

For a team that hasn’t lost a Sierra League girls’ soccer match, there hasn’t been a bigger test to the South Tahoe High junior varsity team’s unbeaten record than on Tuesday night.

South Tahoe rallied for a two second-half goals to tie Douglas 2-2 in Minden, running its league record to 10-0-2.

“I was impressed by the way the girls came back,” said STHS JV coach Bill Spicer. “Sometimes a game like that is more impressive than a 13-0 win.”

Janelle Buts put in a rebound from Brooke King’s shot off the post to get STHS on the scoreboard. Later in the half, Buts scored again on a cross from King, providing the Vikings with the satisfying tie.
