FERNLEY, Nev. – The Whittell track and field team all but dominated the postings when the State seedings for the NIAA 2A State track and field meet came out Sunday.

John Robinson led the charge on the boys side. The senior qualified himself in four events – top seed in the 400 meter dash, 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs. His effort and the effort of the seven individuals or teams who are going to Las Vegas this week for the championships are what fueled a runner-up finish for the boys at the 2A Northern meet in Fernley.

The girls finished in a solid third place in the final team standings – led strongly by Darby Reeder who qualified in four individual events. Sammy Brumbach and Sierra Forvilly each will be heading south to compete in three individual events respectively also. All-in-all the Whittell girls are sending 10 representatives to the NIAA championships where both Brumbach and Forvilly hold one seeds in respective events.

Brumbach is top seed in the girls long jump, and will also be competing in the 100 and 400 meter dash. Forvilly is the top seeded girl in the 300 meter hurdles while she’ll also be competing in the 200 meter dash and 100 meter hurdles.

Reeder is the second seed in the girls triple jump while she also holds a strong shot in placing in the long jump – she is a three seed there. She also qualified in both the 100 and 300 meter hurdle events.

Three relay teams on the girls side advanced through Fernley and will compete at Del Sol High School in Las Vegas.

The 4×200 meter team of Hailey Elliott, Sabrina Swoger, Casey Simon, Caranina Palomino and Samantha Rupp will be representing Whittell. The second seeded 4×400 team includes Swogger, Forvillym Palomino, Rupp and Brumbach. The 4×800 team is also headed to State. That team includes Swogger, Veronica Charles, Elliott, Lauren Marshall, Rupp and Palomino.

Results from Fernley on the boys side looked very similar.

Garrett Bronken is going to State in the 400 meter dash. He joins teammates Robinson and Jenner Felton who also qualified in the same event.

Felton also qualified in the 800 meter run, along with Mark Waite who also doubled up by qualifying himself in the 1,600 meter run. Tanner Sigel had a solid day in the hurdles, and will compete for two State titles – the 110 and 300 meter hurdles.

Three relay teams also qualified for the State meet for the Whittell boys.

Competing in the 4×400 event will be Ben Beck, Bronken, Sigel, Jenner Felton and Zach Welch. IN the 4×200 meter relay, six representatives from Whittell will be advancing. They are Rodney Aguirre-Rodriguez, Felton, Travis Hisken, Welch, Sigel and Beck.

The 2A divisions second seeded 4×800 team will be comprised of Mikey George, Felton, Zach Welch, Waite, Bronken and Josh Welch.

Championships are set for Friday, May 20 beginning at 3 p.m. They will then commence Saturday, May 21 at 2 p.m. beginning with the field event finals. Del Sol High School in Las Vegas is this years host.
