Rock Brand: Sammy Hagar’s Cabo Wabo tequila has a kick to it

Whether you’re in Cabo San Lucas or “South Lake Cabo,” don’t be surprised if you see Sammy Hagar.
The Red Rocker, the man behind the premium tequila, first opened a Cabo Wabo Cantina in Mexico, then one inside Harveys Resort and Casino, closer to his Northern California home.
Guests eating and drinking were treated to an impromptu concert inside the Cantina after Bryan Adams’ recent concert across the street at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe.
“That was the idea of the first Cabo Wabo,” Hagar said. “It’s a place where if I’m on vacation I can go down with some of my buddies and we can jam. That’s exactly what happened in Tahoe.”
Adams played three sets that evening ” two with Hagar.
“That’s what Cabo Wabo is about,” he said. “It’s a rock ‘n’ roll brand, and it just lends itself to a couple shots of tequila, and you go up and play music. It doesn’t get any better than that. That was an awesome night.”

Hagar hasn’t lost any of his enthusiasm for his tequila company, despite selling 80 percent of it in 2007 to Gruppo Campari. Skyy Spirits markets the tequila as does ” of course ” the Red Rocker himself.
“They got the good deal because I don’t know how to give 20 percent,” Hagar said. “If I had 1 percent, they would still be getting the same as if I owned the whole brand. I only know how to do things one way. Pedal to the metal. I can’t drive 55.”
How serious is Hagar?
“I’m proud enough to have the (Cabo Wabo) tattoo on my arm, but now with the new logo I’m probably going to have to get another one on my other arm,” he said. “I’ve got to be updated.”
