Royal Gorge has expansion plans

TRUCKEE – Royal Gorge-USA Cross Country Ski Resort has become the latest Lake Tahoe-area ski resort to announce expansion plans.

Resort operators hope to build a new day lodge, parking area, outdoor ice skating rink and residential area between Lake Van Norden and the Soda Springs railroad grade crossing.

They hope the plan will encourage Union Pacific Railroad to reinstate a train stop that helped bring skiers to the Donner Summit area until the mid-1900s.

Plans call for the new 5,000-square-foot lodge to contain a small cafe, ski and ice skate rental shop and perhaps a small retail store.

”It makes sense to us and our customers to increase services there,” Royal Gorge spokeswoman Jane Dulaney said. ”It’s going to be very basic.”

The expansion will require approval by Nevada County. Preserving wetlands in the area will be a top issue, said Steve Enos, a county planner.
