Sacramento duo is King of the Mountain

Three local teams finished in the top 10 of the King of the Mountain volleyball tournament on Sunday at Zephyr Cove Beach.

South Shore duo Peter Chiarpotti and Dustin Shinn placed fifth in the 17-team two-on-two field. The father-and-son team of Greg and Cody Williams of Stateline placed eighth and tournament director Chad Reichle of Gardnerville and partner David Kamena of San Diego took ninth place.

In the final, Ken Nestlerode and Michael Yates of Sacramento bested Brad Griffith of the Bay Area and Paul Bocage of Southern California, 15-12. All four players are part of the Association of Volleyball. Professionals qualifying circuit, according to Reichle.

“It was a blast,” Reichle said. “It was the same at it always has been. We always have a tough draw. Ten of the 17 teams are really solid, and it’s a battle royal. Guys come every year from Oregon, Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Diego, Santa Cruz and the Bay Area.”

The top four teams in the double-elimination format earned prize money. Nestlerode and Yates collected the first prize of $800.
