Safeway set to open its doors at Round Hill

The first phase of the all new Round Hill Square Shopping Center, which replaces the Round Hill Mall, is complete.

Safeway store will open with a ribbon cutting Wednesday at 10 a.m.

The new store, with nearly 40,000 square feet, is more than twice the size of the existing store.

“A Super Safeway, scaled down to proportions,” said Douglas County Commissioner Don Miner.

The Safeway is only the first step in opening the new center. Within the next few months, the center’s tenants will begin moving into the new center. The shops are currently operating in a section of the old structure with the construction going on nearby. Once they move, the last of the old structure will be demolished. Another section of the new center will be constructed next year.

“It’s been a long time coming,” said Miner, an enthusiastic advocate of redevelopment efforts in the county. “(It’s taken time) to have a developer that has the courage and resources to tackle such a large-scale program.”
