San Mateo couple identified in fatal crash

Staff report

The California Highway Patrol has released the names of the San Mateo couple who were killed in a head-on crash Friday on Highway 89 along Tahoe’s West Shore.

Winfield Fairchild Sr., 83, and Jane Fairchild, 81, died when their Volkswagen Vanagon crossed the double-yellow line on Highway 89 heading south near Sugarpine State Park at about 11:20 a.m. Their van struck an oncoming Ford F450 pickup driven by a 45-year-old Carson City man, said CHP Officer Jeff Gartner. The man was not injured.

“The vehicles involved sustained major damage as a result of the collision. The road was covered with snow and ice at the time of the collision,” Gartner said.

Unsafe speed for the conditions is being investigated as one of the possible causes for the accident.
