Santa Cruz trio has diabolical acoustic sound

The Devil Makes Three, which bills itself as the best band you've never heard of, comes from Santa Cruz to Whiskey Dick's Saloon for a show Friday, March 27.

Billing itself as the best band you’ve never heard of, and lacing a punk perspective on American blues with ragtime, country, folk and rockabilly, The Devil Makes Three returns to Tahoe.

The Devil Makes Three hails from Santa Cruz but has been touring the West Coast constantly over the past seven years.

Guitarist Pete Bernhard fronts upright bassist Lucia Turino and guitarist Cooper McBean. The band plays acoustic music, combining tight vocal harmony and finger-style guitar, with the attitude of a rock band, citing Steve Earl, the Memphis Jug Band and Django Reinhardt as influences.

The trio ventured to Vermont last winter and emerged with the “Aces and Twos” 7-inch on March 24, then followed up with “Do Right Wrong” on April 21.

Tickets are available at the Tahoe Hemp Co. and Mad About Music on the South Shore. After the Friday, March 27, engagement at Whiskey Dick’s Saloon, the Devil Makes Three will play Saturday at the Tahoe Biltmore in Crystal Bay.
