It’s official – Mario Gatto will take over next year as Whittell High School’s principal.

Douglas County School District Superintendent Pendery Clark recommended Gatto to the Board of Trustees Wednesday. The board’s unanimous approval completed the search process, securing Gatto’s position as Whittell’s sixth principal hire in 10 years.

Lake board representative George Echan said he looks forward to meeting Gatto.

“I’m really excited about him coming here,” Echan said. “It seems like he has the depth of experience required to function in a small school like Whittell. I hope the community welcomes him.”

Gatto, 36, attended University of Nevada, Las Vegas and holds a master’s degree in education, as well as a bachelor’s degree in secondary education.

He is principal at Clark County School District’s Virgin Valley Junior/Senior High School in Mesquite, Nev., where he served as dean of students for two years and assistant principal for three years before accepting the principal position last year. His career also includes teaching and athletic director positions.

DCSD Assistant Superintendent of Personnel Services John Soderman said Gatto will be in town Monday and Tuesday to meet with district officials to discuss curriculum, budgeting and the new dean’s position at Whittell.
