School board seat still open

Jill Darby

There is still a seat open on Lake Tahoe Unified School District’s Board of Education.

Stacy Romagnolo resigned from the board July 2 due to conflict of interest when her husband became a finalist for the principal position at Sierra House Elementary School. Mark Romagnolo, former vice principal at South Tahoe High School, was hired for that job last week.

The board voted July 10 to appoint someone to serve the remainder of Stacy Romagnolo’s term, which ends Dec. 7 along with that of board President Wendy David. Both spots will be filled in the Nov. 6 election.

Letters of interest for the interim board position, including a 200-word statement of qualifications, must be turned in at the district office by Monday. Board members will interview selected candidates at a special board meeting July 30.

“A board member has the opportunity to make a positive difference in the education of children by setting policy, reviewing programs and insuring that our school district is fiscally sound while encouraging educational excellence for all,” David said. “I would encourage any person to apply who has the time, the energy and a real interest in the future of our school district.”

Superintendent Diane Scheerhorn said there has not been much response for the position, but hopes more people will submit letters by Monday.

“It is an opportunity for a citizen to give back to the community by serving on a board,” she said. “Specifically, a board of education offers the opportunity for the governance of the education of the children in the community.”
