School board will discuss two-way immersion program expansion

Sara Thompson / Tahoe Daily Tribune

The Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board will decided whether to expand the two-way immersion program at Bijou Community School.

The meeting is at 6 p.m. March 24 at the district office, 1021 Al Tahoe Blvd.

This is the second year of the Two-way Immersion Program, which is designed to teach students to become fluent in Spanish and English. Because the program has become so popular, parents are requesting a second kindergarten class be added for the 2009-10 school year.

One kindergarten class is made up of 20 students ” 10 English speaking students and 10 Spanish speaking students.

The district received 22 applications from the English-speaking parents and 27 applications from Spanish-speaking parents for the 2009-10 kindergarten class.

The board will hear three different options regarding the program: one option is to add another kindergarten class each year, the second is to just add an additional kindergarten class this year only and rotate that class up the grades, and the last option would be to maintain the existing program with just one kindergarten class.
