Search and rescue seeks volunteers

The South Lake Tahoe/ El Dorado County Search and Rescue team is looking for volunteers to help conduct search-and-rescue missions in eastern El Dorado County and surrounding wilderness areas.

Applicants must be 18 years or older, but no special skills are necessary to join, according to an email from volunteer Jamie Dahl.

“Our candidate-training academy prepares all new field volunteers to safely execute a wide variety of missions. In addition to members in fielding status, we accept members for non-fielding roles with a focus on planning, operations, logistics and administrative support,” Dahl said.

Initial training introduces volunteers to topics such as search theory, lost person behavior, helicopter operations, tracking, GPS, navigation and wilderness survival. Volunteers then have the opportunity to participate in specialized teams including technical rope rescue, alpine mountaineering, Nordic rescue, off highway vehicle rescue and water rescue.

The team responds to an average of 65 calls annually, according to Dahl. In 2012, the team provided emergency responses for about 140 victims, many of whom were in life-and-death situations.

More information is available at or by contacting El Dorado County Sheriff’s deputy Greg Almos at 530-573-3058.
