Search for plane with Reno men to focus on area east of Meeker

MEEKER, Colo. (AP) – Witnesses who reported seeing a low-flying plane helped volunteer pilots refine their search Monday for a missing pilot and three passengers from Reno, Nev.

The single-engine Piper Cherokee disappeared last week after stopping for fuel as the men were trying to get to Denver for an NHL finals game between the Colorado Avalanche and the New Jersey Devils.

Coworkers in Reno have identified the people on the plane as pilot Richard ”Dan” Filippe and passengers Ross ”Roscoe” Jones, Jon Peters and his brother Mark Peters. Local and federal authorities could not confirm the identities Monday.

Five aircraft with the Civil Air Patrol were focusing the search about 15 miles east of Meeker.

Two people have said they saw a low-flying airplane around the time of the crash, said search coordinator Jim Alsum.

The search was stopped for about five hours Monday after searchers were grounded in inclement weather, Alsum said.

Radar data has been unable to pinpoint the missing plane’s location. No flight plan was filed, and air traffic controllers were not in contact with it.

No emergency locator signals have been received from the plane.

The Rio Blanco County Sheriff’s Office was asking outfitters on horseback to watch for the missing plane, Sheriff Phil Stubblefield said.
