Seniors eligible for prescription discounts

Under recently enacted legislation SB393, Medicare recipients living in California qualify for discounted prices on prescriptions filled in the state of California.

The law signed by Gov. Gray Davis requires pharmacies to charge recipients of Medicare a prescription rate no more than the Medi-Cal reimbursement rate.

Patients can request that the pharmacy fill out an HCFA 1500 for drugs that are payable by Medicare, such as anti-cancer drugs, anti-rejection drugs, etc. The patient must then pay for the prescription and Medicare will provide reimbursement.

Patients may choose to have their prescriptions filled with the brand name drug.

The law does not cover over-the-counter or compounded drug prescriptions.

For more information, contact a pharmacy near you and ask about the benefits of SB393.
