Shasta climber found dead

The Associated Press

MOUNT SHASTA, Calif.-A climber who was stranded on California’s Mount Shasta has been found dead.

The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday rangers found the body of 26-year-old Thomas Bennett in a snow cave where his friend had left him. Bennett’s body is being airlifted off the mountain.

Rescuers had been prevented by stormy weather and poor visibility from conducting a search for several days.

Bennett’s climbing partner called 911 on Sunday to report Bennett had collapsed near the summit of the 14,000-foot mountain near the California-Oregon border.
