Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort hosting canned food drive

Provided to the Tribune

Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort is collecting canned food for the food bank of El Dorado County until Jan. 12.

Guests are asked to bring canned nonperishable foods such as canned soup, dried pasta, crackers and pasta sauce to the collection bin next to the season pass office. If three bins of food are filled by Jan. 12, general manager John Rice will sit in a dunk tank and let customers try to hit a target to sink him.

According to Feeding America’s 2011 Map the Meal Gap study, 15.26 percent of El Dorado County – or 27,850 individuals – are food insecure.Food insecurity is the Department of Agriculture’s measure for lack of access to enough food for an active, healthy life.

The Food Bank of El Dorado County provides food assistance on a daily basis to over 40 local emergency food response agencies, including battered women’s shelters, senior centers, local food pantries, under privileged youth programs, youth shelters, soup kitchens, maternity homes, and more. When guests contribute to the Food Bank their donations help nonprofit establishments throughout El Dorado County feed people in need.
