Sierra Athletic Club under new ownership
Reflecting ongoing changes to gyms in the area, Sierra Athletic Club has been purchased by six-year member Joe Pettit.
Pettit, who has added up 13 years in ski industry marketing at Northstar-at-Tahoe and most recently Kirkwood Mountain Resort, has claimed his first business. He took over for Ray Anderson and Jeff Williams on Nov. 2.
Another co-owner, personal trainer Eufay Wood, has stayed on with a stake in the company located at the Tahoe Keys Professional Plaza on Venice Drive.
The gym is undergoing an estimated $20,000 remodel and is expected to reopen by Tuesday.
A stack of Domino’s Pizza boxes were lying on the floor Sunday to reflect the hard work put into the gym.
Pettit, a 17-year resident, will give the gym a face-lift. In December, a group fitness center will feature body sculpting, kick boxing, hip-hop, pilates and karate classes in the dance studio at the Tahoe Keys Marina.
He’ll keep spin classes on site and add a few televisions in corners that won’t hinder the view.
Pettit, 42, hired Sam Wade to manage the gym, and he expressed his excitement over his new business.
“When I was a junior in high school, I discovered weight lifting. It changed my life,” he said. “I remember wanting to purchase a gym as far back as 1991, when my brother Jim and I worked out in a small gym in Incline Village. We talked about opening our own club and calling it Jim and Joe’s Gym for the Average Joe.”
He ended up beefing up his weight and fitness, ultimately receiving a scholarship to play football at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
